Analysis of Research Trends Related to Homosexuality in Health-related Fields

Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to analyze papers related to homosexuality, determine the current status of research, and suggest future research directions.

Methods : Using analysis criteria developed by the researchers, 211 articles between 1996 and 2022 were reviewed.
Results : Quantitative research was 44.08%, qualitative research was 42.65%, literature and overview research was 11.37%, and mixed research was 1.90%. Research design 56.40% were academic journal papers and 38.86% were master's theses. Research subjects were 71.28% homosexual and 28.72% non-homosexual. The research fields were counseling and psychology 42.18%, social science 20.38%, education 14.69%, social welfare 7.11%, women's studies 5.21%, nursing 5.21%, humanities 2.37%, public health 1.90%, and medicine 0.95%. Key Variables were 25.59% for mental health-related studies, 19.43% for studies on perceptions of homosexuality among non-homosexuals, 13.74% for studies on homosexual identity experiences, and 10.43% for studies on experiences of discrimination against homosexuals.

Conclusion : The amount of research is steadily increasing. Sufficient research should be conducted on the diverse life experiences of homosexuals using various research methods to understand and educate the subjects.
